John Hennigan — “Mayor of Slamtown” Wrestling T-Shirt Design

Custom illustration and merchandise design for professional wrestler John Hennigan, created around his “Mayor of Slamtown” persona.

Hennigan has performed under numerous wrestling names, including John Morrison, Johnny Nitro, Johnny Mundo and Johnny Impact. This 2019 commission continued an earlier collaboration in which I had created merchandise artwork for his Johnny Mundo persona.

The Commission

Building the Mayor of Slamtown identity

John Hennigan commissioned me to create another wrestling shirt following our earlier work together. This time the design was built around his “Mayor of Slamtown” persona, with the title “Slamtown — Office of Mayor.”

At the center of the design is a skull-and-crossbones character wearing the distinctive sunglasses associated with Hennigan’s wrestling persona. Crosses in the lenses, long hair, stars, lettering and the mock-official “Office of Mayor” language turn the character into an emblem for Slamtown rather than simply a portrait of the wrestler.

The result combines character illustration, typography and merchandise graphics into a single identity designed to read immediately on a wrestling T-shirt.

Creative Collaboration

Designing for John Hennigan’s wrestling personas

One of the most enjoyable aspects of working with John has been the creative freedom behind the commissions. A wrestling persona already combines character, performance, costume, attitude and visual identity, which gives illustration plenty to work with.

Hennigan’s career has taken him through different promotions and identities, including Johnny Nitro, John Morrison, Johnny Mundo and Johnny Impact. The name changes, but the design problem remains interesting: create artwork that belongs unmistakably to the particular character being presented.

For Slamtown, that meant pushing the graphics toward a deliberately oversized wrestling emblem — bold enough for merchandise, recognizable from a distance and specific to the character rather than relying on a generic wrestling aesthetic.

Earlier John Hennigan Project

Johnny Mundo — “This Is My World”

The Slamtown design was not our first project together. I had previously created an illustrated wrestling shirt for Hennigan under his Johnny Mundo name. That commission took a different visual direction, built specifically around the Johnny Mundo persona and the phrase “This Is My World.”

The Finished Design

Illustration that has to work on the shirt

Merchandise illustration has a practical side. The artwork cannot depend on the viewing conditions of a portfolio page: it has to retain its character when printed, worn, photographed and seen in motion.

That is why the Slamtown design is constructed around a strong central silhouette, limited visual hierarchy and lettering that forms part of the illustration. The final shirt remains recognizably connected to Hennigan’s character while functioning as a graphic object in its own right.
