The Artist Series

Four artists, one imaginary afternoon in Provence

This series began with the idea of bringing four immediately recognizable artists into the same illustrated world. Rather than drawing conventional caricature portraits, I wanted each character to carry a small visual story — something connected to the artist, the work and the mythology that has grown around them.

The Provençal setting felt natural. Vincent van Gogh is inseparable from the extraordinary period he spent in Arles, while Pablo Picasso also has deep associations with the south of France. Around them, Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dalí bring their own unmistakable visual worlds into the landscape.

The result is not intended as art history. It is an affectionate collision of references, personalities, color and visual jokes — a celebration of artists whose work became recognizable far beyond the walls of museums.

Visual Storytelling

Portraits built around visual ideas

Each portrait contains its own small visual joke or reference. Picasso takes a cubist dog for a walk. Dalí arrives with a melting clock and a palette that seems equally unwilling to obey the usual laws of matter. Van Gogh and Frida inhabit their own colorful variations on familiar imagery.

That is what interests me about caricature at its best. Recognition comes from the face, but character comes from everything around it — gesture, props, color, setting and the small narrative details that turn a portrait into an illustration.

Illustration & Composition

From individual portraits to an illustrated world

The individual characters were designed to work independently, but the larger composition gave me the opportunity to bring them into one continuous scene. Architecture, landscape, objects and drawing materials turn the portraits into something closer to a small illustrated world.

The work combines expressive line drawing with digital gouache and watercolor-like textures. I wanted the finish to retain the warmth and irregularity of painted illustration rather than becoming overly smooth or mechanical.
