The First Proof Copy of MARVIN Arrives
In November 2019, I received the first proof copy of my graphic novel MARVIN: Based on The Way I Was by Marvin Hamlisch from Schiffer Publishing.
After spending so much time writing, adapting and illustrating a book, seeing the physical copy for the first time was a very different moment from working with pages on a screen.
From finished artwork to an actual book
The proof copy was my first opportunity to see the complete project as a physical publication: cover, page sequence, printing, binding and all the individual illustrated scenes brought together as one book.
MARVIN was scheduled for publication by Schiffer Publishing in February 2020.
A very personal publishing milestone
I was extremely happy with the way the book had come together, and particularly pleased to have had the opportunity to create a graphic novel based on the life and work of Marvin Hamlisch, whose music I had enjoyed for many years.
These snapshots were taken just after the proof copy arrived — before the book’s official publication.
A first glimpse inside MARVIN
The finished book brought together the sequential illustrations, page layouts and narrative structure developed for the adaptation.
Seeing the spreads in print was one of the clearest reminders that a graphic novel is ultimately designed to be experienced as a sequence of physical pages rather than as isolated drawings.
