Hats Off! Ian David Marsden cartoon submissions to the 25th Euro-kartoenale Kruishoutem

As a cartoonist, there’s something magical about taking a theme and letting it evolve into visual storytelling. For the 25th Euro-kartoenale Kruishoutem, this year’s theme—“The Hat – Hats Off”—offered endless opportunities to blend humor, satire, and creativity.

I’m thrilled to be one of the 16 participating cartoonists from France, contributing five original cartoons to this international cartoon competition. Each of my works explores hats not just as accessories, but as powerful symbols of culture, evolution, and individuality.

Exploring the Evolution of Hats Through Cartoons

From ancient alien theories to playful nods at fairy tales, my cartoons for this year’s Euro-kartoenale cover a wide range of interpretations:

• “Crown Wars” – Two kings engage in a comical power struggle, measuring their wealth and influence with ever-expanding crowns that defy logic (and balance).

Cartoon of two regal figures with oversized, ornate crowns, highlighting themes of greed and one-upmanship, created by Ian David Marsden for the European Cartoon Center.

• “Buried Alien Statues” – A satirical take on ancient alien theories, featuring colossal statues buried in sand, their hats forming pyramid tops, blending archaeology with a touch of whimsy.

Cartoon of buried alien-like statues with pyramids as their hat tops, referencing ancient alien theories, by Ian David Marsden for the European Cartoon Center.

• “Evolution of Hats” – From prehistoric headgear to modern skyscraper-inspired designs, this cartoon humorously traces humanity’s ever-growing ambition in hat design.

• “The Rebel Jester” – A playful twist on conformity: seven dwarves march along in identical hats, while one bold outlier steps out in a bright jester’s cap, celebrating individuality.

Cartoon of the seven dwarves in uniform hats with one wearing a colorful jester hat, created by Ian David Marsden for the European Cartoon Center.

• “Animals in Hats” – A lighthearted look at animals sporting hats of every kind, proving that style isn’t just for humans.

Each cartoon reflects the Euro-kartoenale’s theme – hats or “hats off”

About the Euro-kartoenale Kruishoutem

Held in Kruishoutem, Belgium, the Euro-kartoenale has been a cornerstone of international cartoon art since 1978. Known for its universal and often abstract themes, this biennial cartoon competition challenges artists to think creatively while addressing cultural, social, and political topics.

Over the years, themes like FreedomThe Soul, and The Wall have sparked incredible creativity from cartoonists worldwide. This year’s milestone 25th edition, “The Hat – Hats Off,” celebrates not just the theme but also the enduring relevance of the European Cartoon Center (ECC) in promoting editorial cartoons and satirical art.

European Cartoon Center Kruishoutem

The ECC Kruishoutem is more than just the home of the Euro-kartoenale. It’s a cultural hub dedicated to cartoon art, offering:

• Exhibitions featuring works from international cartoonists.

• Workshops for aspiring cartoonists and illustrators.

• An extensive library of cartoons and humor-related books.

• A permanent collection of past Euro-kartoenale entries, showcasing the best of editorial cartooning over the decades.

The European Cartoon Center has been instrumental in building a global stage for cartoonists and illustrators, providing a space where humor and art connect across borders.

Why the Euro-kartoenale Matters

For decades, the Euro-kartoenale has provided a platform for cartoonists to showcase their talent, offering a rare opportunity to express satire, humor, and storytelling in a way that resonates with global audiences. This year’s edition continues to celebrate the power of editorial cartoons to bridge cultures and spark conversations.

As a participant, it’s an honor to contribute to this vibrant tradition. My five cartoons for “The Hat – Hats Off” reflect my passion for illustration, satire, and creative storytelling, and I hope they bring a smile (or a thoughtful nod) to everyone who sees them.
