Ian David Marsden – Editorial Cartoon Submissions for the 25th Euro-kartoenale Kruishoutem

As a cartoonist, I often find creative fuel in thematic challenges. The 2025 edition of the Euro-kartoenale Kruishoutem invited artists from around the world to explore the theme “The Hat – Hats Off.” I submitted five hand-drawn editorial cartoons, each interpreting the theme through humor, visual metaphor, and narrative detail.

These illustrations continue my exploration of character-driven cartooning and visual satire—expressing commentary through traditional techniques and storytelling composition.

My Submitted Cartoons – Concept Overview

“Crown Wars” – A satire of status and rivalry, showing two monarchs locked in a comic contest of ever-growing crowns and inflated ego.

“Buried Alien Statues” – A whimsical take on ancient alien speculation, featuring otherworldly statues with pyramid-like hats partially revealed in the sand.

About the Euro-kartoenale Kruishoutem

Organized by the European Cartoon Center (ECC) in Belgium, the Euro-kartoenale is a biennial competition that invites cartoonists to reflect on abstract social and cultural themes. Since 1978, it has provided an international platform for editorial illustration and satirical commentary.

The ECC also offers exhibitions, workshops, and a permanent collection of cartoon art. It serves as a hub for promoting visual humor and cross-cultural communication through drawing.

Note: My work was submitted for consideration and reflects my personal interpretation of the 2025 theme. Inclusion in the final exhibition is subject to the jury’s selection process.
